Newsletter

The 2012 annual newsletter went out on schedule and should be received by most members before the upcoming long weekend. The complete document (7.2 Mb, with the handy calendar sheet appended) is also posted here, too. Thanks again to Editor, Debbie Awde and all the Directors who helped with this annual project.

If you have ever browsed through the archives of past newsletters here on the website, you may have noticed no entries for 2002 and 1999. If anyone has a copy of either of these, (or other back issues not listed), please contact the Webmaster, or any of the Directors. We would be like to scan your copy 'for our files'.

Low Water Levels

The Quinte Conservation Authority has followed the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority in declaring a Level 1 Low Water Condition - raising concerns about possible low water levels (again) this summer on our lakes. The condition is due to the lack of typical precipitation, (both snow and rain), so far this year. Low water levels also mean lands and forests are drier than normal - increasing fire risks. A fire ban is possible if the dry conditions continue. Fire Ban Info is available by calling (613) 336-1851.

Lane Maintenance

Neighbouring North Frontenac Township has published an excellent article about the need to maintain private laneways so that Emergency vehicles can actually reach residential properties. Good information. Check it out here.

1st Annual Skootamatta Lake Festival

Older members, (and their now-adult children), may fondly remember SDRA events from years ago, where kids were an integral part of informal gatherings and organized events. Over the past several years, the SDRA Board has focused almost entirely on important issues like development, lake management planning and logging. To appeal to 'new' kids and families, the Association is organizing a first-ever 'Lake Festival' on July 28th, at the Trail's End Landing. The day promises to be a lot of fun for kids and a chance for newer folks to get acquainted.

Crime Prevention Tips

The OPP is contacting cottage associations in Lennox and Addington county ...

... I am a police officer with the Ontario Provincial Police assigned to Lennox and Addington County from the Napanee Detachment, specifically I work with investigations in property crimes. Often every spring we have several reports of break and enters that had occurred to seasonal residences. Typically many of these occurred during the winter months and are reported when first discovered in the spring time, when property owners re-attend these locations to open the cottage for the season.

The two attached documents have been prepared by the Ontario Provincial Police and are tip sheets for crime prevention methods. [Ed. 'Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design' & 'Home Security Checklist'] Additional resources are available at www.opp.ca in the "resources" section. We are asking that property owners review this information and take appropriate steps that will deter any criminal activity. I encourage you to review the attached documents ...

In the event you have been a victim to property crime, please report this incident to your local detachment at the time of discovery. It is important to contact police prior to cleaning anything up so that officers have the opportunity to collect any evidence, if any is present. Also upon discovery of a break and enter or other crime scene please remember not to contaminate the scene, ideally you should contact police prior to entering the building.

You can contact the O.P.P. toll free at 1-888-310-1122 to make a report. In the event of an emergency call 9-1-1.

If making a report please do not contact myself directly, rather contact your local detachment, [Ed. Kaladar - (613) 336-2244], or use the toll free number provided to make a report.

I wish you all a safe cottage season...

Nick Todd # 13125,
Detective Constable
Napanee Street Team
Ontario Provincial Police
