The dark sky event was created as a result of our strategic planning exercise in 2024. Many members participated in its creation. One of the questions asked of members was “what do you most love about our lake and want to preserve?” Many members expressed “our beautiful dark skies” Many also expressed they are less and less able to enjoy our dark skies due to the number lights on docks, shorelines, pathways and so on. The introduction of solar lights has had a real effect on our dark skies. It doesn’t just impact our viewing pleasure, it also has negative impacts on our nocturnal wildlife.
Gary discussed why our area has great dark skies, how to get the most out of enjoying our dark skies and very importantly, how to protect our dark skies. Also discussed was a quick 5-step questionnaire to see how much each of us are contributing to light pollution. The 5 questions are: ———————————————————— * Are your lights useful and required? * Are they targeted downwards to avoid light going to the sky? * Are they brighter than needed? * Are the warm coloured – amber tone lights * Are they controlled with timers, motion sensors. Are they off when not needed
It was a great webinar, for those of you that wish to learn more can view Gary’s presentation at the following link:

In addition, we are starting into the 2025 Perseid Meteor Shower. Gary shared with us that many meteors we see are the size of a grain of sand!!! For more information in Dark Skies and the 2025 Perseid Meteor Shower please go to the following links.
