SDRA Obituary: Glenna Cole Slattery

GLENNA COLE SLATTERY 

Glenna Cole Slattery, a Canadian-born American, died in her 90th year on July 3, 2022, at Venice Green Village in Venice, Florida, of natural complications related to Alzheimer’s. Glenna retired in 1990 as the CEO of the Ontario Nurses Association. She successfully advocated for pay equity, was a prolific collective bargaining negotiator, and a master union organizer who was not afraid to use the strike weapon. Previous trade unionist positions were with the 1199 Service Employees International Union and the New Jersey State Nurses Association. Glenna graduated from Lafayette High School and Sisters of Charity Hospital School of Nursing, both located in Buffalo, NY. After a career spanning three decades in clinical nursing she pursued higher education, earning a BS from Stockton University and a MPA from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. Glenna was a life-long grass roots activist and community leader who served the following non-profit organizations: the League of Women Voters, Junior League, the Skootamata District Rate Payers Association as a co-founder, Beartown Ski Club, Bailey Avenue PTA as President, and the Friends of Bon Echo. Glenna was an avid reader and loved the out of doors. She appreciated fine art, music, gardening, sharing a bottle of wine with friends and caring for her beloved dog, Chi. Glenna is survived by two children: Isabelle Levere DeRoy nee Slattery (Joseph) of Sarasota, FL, and Lt. Col. (U.S Army retired) J. Cole Slattery (Annette) of Leesburg, VA. Five grandchildren: Glenna Hamilton DeRoy of Norwood, MA; Maj. (U.S. Army) J. Cole N. DeRoy (Rachel) of Bangkok, Thailand; Theresa Barrile nee DeRoy (Tom) of Framingham, MA; Lauren Christine Harr nee Slattery (Christopher) of Aldie, VA and Shannon Nicole Slattery of Arlington, VA. Three great- grandchildren: Annabelle Christine Harr and Shelby Lynne Harr of Aldie, VA and Elliott Joseph Barrile of Framingham, MA. Glenna was predeceased by her mother, Isabelle Cole nee Levere; father, John Clayton Cole; sister, Lee Anna Ruth Cole; and husband of 18 years, John Francis Slattery. A graveside United Methodist funeral service and burial will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery on July 8, 2022, in Buffalo, NY. Arrangements are being handled by Dietrich Funeral Home of Amherst, NY.
